CryptoLogic Poker Rooms to Move to Boss Media
Date: January 20, 2009CryptoLogic has announced that all poker rooms on its network will move to Boss Media by the end of March. According to Justin Thouin, President of Product Development told PokerNewsDaily.com, “If you look at the online gaming industry, it’s becoming more difficult to be a generalist. The companies that are succeeding now and will succeed in the future are those who can specialize. We saw an opportunity to differentiate ourselves in the online casino space.”
The move was made by CryptoLogic in an attempt to increase profits. They are shooting for profits between $9 and $10 for this year. The move of the network is also geared to reduce company expenses for both office space rental and server rental.

Playboy Poker had recently announced that they would be ceasing operations soon and both Sun Poker and Poker Plex had announced moves to other networks. When asked about the future of online gaming, he stated “You’ll see more specialization. This is still a very attractive industry. Online gaming is still growing quickly. You’ll see it become a much more competitive space. Partnerships will form in ways there haven’t been before.”
While the larger sites such as PokerStars and Full Tilt continue to thrive, the smaller networks are still struggling to survive. Many in the United States are hoping that the UIGEA will get overturned and revitalize the industry.

Playboy Poker to Shut Down
Date: January 16, 2009
Playboy Gaming will cease operations as of January 29th according to emails issued by the company on Wednesday. The email stated that “Playboy Gaming will no longer have a poker site and will not be moving to another network.”
Playboy Poker is a member of the CryptoLogic Network. CryptoLogic has confirmed that Playboy Poker will be shutting down and is not planning on moving to another network.
Playboy Gaming opened its online casino in 2007, but the brand just did not resonate with the worldwide population in the same way that the brand does in the U.S. While the site provided many unique experience that could be purchased with player points, this did not prove enough to keep patrons interested or to drive players to the site in mass.
Playboy Poker is just another casualty of the UIGEA. After the passage of the law, many sites left the U.S. market and in effect crippled their marketability. It follows in the long list of poker sites to close in 2008 and early 2009. There are hopes that the Obama administration will introduce legislation to overturn the UIGEA, but until then, this trend will likely continue.
